The objective of this study was to identify alteration in precipitation and number of days without rain in the southern region of Rio de Janeiro state. We analyzed in the monthly total days without rain (P=0) and the monthly average rainfall occurred between 1938-2011. The monthly total of days without rain ware subjected to simple regression analysis to identify changes in the distribution of time-series and the segmented regression used to identify periods with different characteristics in the temporal distribution of number of days without rain. The segments of the series days without rain indicated by the point of interruption was subjected to Student's t test to identify if the monthly series of days without rain there is alteration with statistical significance. The results showed that the changes made by the monthly total days without rain occurred mostly in the decades 40, 60 and 80 at an interval of about 20 years which may indicate precipitation responses a climate oscillation with modulation about 20 years with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). The results showed reduction in rainfall for the months of the rainy and dry season with increasing number of days without rainfall for almost every month when compared segments when segments compared.
Keywords: segmented linear regression, Student's t test, Pacific decadal oscillation.
