O texto aborda a sociedade piauiense em seu processo de formação quando a conquista da terra se achava em fase de consolidação. Tem por base os autos processuais de queixa-crime referentes ao rapto de mulheres no Piauí setecentista, que se constituía em artifício para a formação de núcleos familiares. A idéia central é de que essa prática decorria da predominância numérica dos homens entre os habitantes livres locais e da expectativa de homens e mulheres em conquistarem condição social que consideravam melhor para si e para seus descendentes.
This text deals with the formation of Piauí society at the when the process of territorial conquest was in the stage of consolidation. It analyzes criminal processes involving the kidnapping of women during the 18 th century; a practice witch constituted a stratagem for the formation of family nuclei. The text proposes that this practice derived from both the numerical superiority of males among the free population and the expectations of both men and women who fought to improve their social positions for themselves and their descendants.
