Abstract

Countering the perspectives stated by the great manuals of administrative history, which relegated clerks and secretaries to a merely accessory and bureaucratic role within institutions, this article analyzes the political protagonism of such agents through the case study of António Barbosa de Lima, secretary of government in the Captaincy of Pernambuco between 1682 and 1712. To this end, we observe the trajectory of this man and some features of his political thought, manifested in two rare writings that he gave to the governors António Félix Machado and his son Félix José Machado.

Doutor em História pelo Programa Interuniversitário de Doutoramento em História, Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa. Professor Visitante no Programa de Pós-Graduação em História da Universidade Federal de Alagoas. Tem desenvolvido estudos no âmbito da História Social do Poder, das Elites e das Instituições na América Portuguesa, abordando as instituições de governo local, os governadores de capitanias, a comunicação política e as políticas da informação na Época Moderna.
