POVOS INDÍGENAS NAS GUERRAS E CONQUISTA DO SERTÃO NORDESTINO NO PERÍODO COLONIAL
Abstract
O artigo analisa a política de alianças e guerras entre a Coroa Portuguesa e os povos indígenas no sertão nordestino no período colonial. Os conflitos foram agrupados em três grandes regiões: o sertão do recôncavo baiano e a margem baiana do rio São Francisco, incluindo o extremo sul do Piauí; o sertão das capitanias de Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande e Ceará; e o sertão das capitanias do Piauí e Maranhão. Este agrupamento correspondeu, grosso modo, à seqüência temporal na qual os conflitos adquirem maior densidade na documentação pesquisada e permitiu visualizar melhor como se deu a movimentação dos povos a partir do contato e quais as conseqüências para os mesmos. Além disso, problematiza a periodização e abrangência do processo histórico denominado de Guerra dos Bárbaros.
