OS XUKURU E O “SUL”: migrações e trabalho indígena na lavoura canavieira em Pernambuco e Alagoas
Abstract
Nas memórias dos índios Xukuru, assim como em registros históricos, é citada a migração para a Zona da Mata Sul de Pernambuco, chamada “o Sul” pelos índios. Os Xukuru relatam em suas tradições orais que por causa das violências dos fazendeiros invasores das terras do antigo aldeamento de Cimbres, famílias indígenas fugindo de perseguições, da fome e da seca, engrossaram o grande contingente de mão-de-obra disperso por regiões vizinhas ou migraram para lugares mais distantes. Muitas famílias foram trabalhar na lavoura da cana-de-açúcar. Os índios Xukuru que possuíam pequenos lotes de terras e migravam periodicamente por causa da seca, retornavam com as primeiras chuvas aos seus lugares de origens. Outros por falta de terras, por falta de trabalho para sobrevivência, migraram também para Zona da Mata em Pernambuco e Alagoas, onde se estabeleceram reinventando a vida e suas relações no mundo do açúcar.
