ARTÍFICES DE COR DO RECIFE: DOS PRIVILÉGIOS CORPORATIVOS À TENTATIVA DE CONTROLE DA ESCOLARIZAÇÃO DOS OFÍCIOS – DÉCADAS DE 1840 E 1850
Abstract
No Ocidente, o final do século XVIII testemunhou o enfraquecimento de algumas formas de organização social vinculadas ao Antigo Regime. No mundo do trabalho, por exemplo, foram atacadas as corporações de ofício e destruídos seus privilégios monopolistas. Na Europa, paulatinamente, Estados como França e Inglaterra criaram escolas profissionalizantes, que procuraram golpear mortalmente o tirocínio artesanal e o poder dos mestres de ofício. No Brasil, a Constituição de 1824, inspirada em valores ilustrados e europeus, também extinguiu as corporações de ofício. Contudo, o Estado pouco atuou para a criação de escolas de artes e ofícios. Existiu um importante vácuo entre a proibição do monopólio do ensino nas oficinas e a criação de significativas organizações escolares voltadas ao treinamento de futuros trabalhadores. No Recife, um grupo de mestres de ofício de pele escura, livres, que experimentou os privilégios corporativos, tentou ocupar o espaço vago deixado pelo Estado. É sobre os fluxos e refluxos dessa tentativa que versa esse artigo.
