Abstract

O presente artigo investiga a primeira gramática inglesa publicada por um brasílico, em Liverpool, no ano de 1812. Em tempos de agitação política e transformações econômicas que abalaram o Império português, a circulação de compêndios de gramática inglesa, bem como sua introdução nos colégios e círculos intelectuais, ampliou o acesso às notícias vindas da Inglaterra e aos livros que  difundiam práticas e ideias liberais, antagônicas à manutenção do sistema colonial na América portuguesa.

 

This article investigates the first enlish grammar published by a brazilian in Liverpool in the year of 1812. In times of political unrest and economic transformations that shook the Portuguese Empire, the circulation of english grammar textbooks and their introduction into schools and intellectual circles expanded access to the news coming from England and to books that spread liberalist practices and ideas, which were antagonistic to the maintenance of the colonial system in Portuguese America.

outor em História Social pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (2010), com estágio doutoral na Universidade de Coimbra (2008). Tem experiência na área de História, com ênfase em História Social e História do Brasil Colonial, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: História do Brasil, História da Bahia, Historiografia do Brasil, História do Brasil Colonial, História da Igreja Católica, História da Companhia de Jesus no Brasil, História das Guerras Neerlandesas no Brasil (1624-1654) e História do Império Ultramarino de Portugal. Experiência em pesquisa arquivística em Portugal, Espanha, Itália e Brasil. Pesquisador especialista em Bibliografia Brasiliana e Bibliografia Americana, com ênfase no estudo de obras raras e circulação de manuscritos no período colonial.
