O trabalho objetiva analisar as políticas indigenistas na província da Bahia durante as décadas de 1820 e 1860. As duas regiões escolhidas – as comarcas do sul e do extremo oeste – representavam, naquela época, zonas de fronteira e locais em que o avanço do povoamento, da colonização e da exploração econômica dava seus passos iniciais. Ali, as autoridades e agentes que lidavam com os problemas de expansão e ocupação tiveram de se apropriar do conceito de índio selvagem, correntemente chamado de gentio, frequentemente acompanhado do qualificativo “bravio” e comumente visto como formador de “hordas de bárbaros”. Não foi apenas utilização de termos: esta classificação trouxe a reedição de práticas de confronto com aqueles grupos indígenas, que se mesclavam com a estratégia do aldeamento.
This study intends to analyze the Indigenist policies in province of Bahia during 1820s and 1860s. The two regions chose – the south counties and extreme west – represented, in that time, boundary zones and places in whose advance of population, colonization and economic exploration did its first steps. There, authorities and agents involved with problems of expansion and occupation had to appropriate of savage Indian concept, frequently named “gentio”, often accompanied of adjective “wild” and commonly viewed constituting “barbarian hordes”. Not only terms were utilized: that classification brought the re-edition of practices of confrontation against those Indian groups, expedients that merged with settlement strategies.
