This article analyzes the jerky beef trade of Rio Grande with the ports of Bahia and Pernambuco and the investments made by Pelotas owners on farms both in the campaign Rio Grande do Sul, as the campaign Uruguayan, north of the Rio Negro. The increasing development of Pelotas manufacturing complex in the first decades of the eight hundred has increased the demand for land and cattle, causing an agrarian expansion towards southwest border of the province. This phenomenon led to a series of conflicts that have provoked two military interventions in the Brazilian army in Montevideo (1851 and 1864). These wars were crucial to winning the competition against platinum saladeros, while maintaining high levels of product trade between the 1850s and 1860s.
