A cidade de Juazeiro do Norte é conhecida, no Nordeste brasileiro, como centro de "romarias". Ao estudioso desse fenômeno popular, surgem, de imediato, indagações, quanto à sua origem, ao tempo em que começou, como se desenvolveu, quais as consequências, e o seu legado. Tentar uma resposta a tais perquirições será o objetivo do presente trabalho.
The city of Juazeiro do Norte is known, in northeastern Brazil, as the center of "pilgrimages". To the studious of this popular phenomenon, questions immediately arise as to its origin, the time when it began, how it developed, what the consequences, and its legacy. Attempting to respond to such inquiries will be the aim of this paper.
