Abstract

No século XVI, século da expansão ultramarina do povo lusitano, além das transformações sócio-econômicas, Portugal acolheu as novas tendências artísticas que então constituíam a modernidade na Europa: as do Renascimento. País que espiritualmente permaneceu romântico, e que, na arquitetura não sentiu a espacialidade e o estruturalismo, salvo exemplos isolados, do gótico, e que, na pintura, nesse período tanta influência recebeu dos Países-baixos, veio a ser palco das transformações de um gótico final, sui-gêneris, o manuelino, em uma Renascença pouco assimilada, faltando-Ihe compreensão espacial. Na verdade, foi a corrente internacional do Maneirismo a que tomou corpo e melhor se identificou com o gosto português.

In the sixteenth century, century of the overseas expansion of the Lusitanian people, in addition to socio-economic transformations, Portugal welcomed the new artistic trends that constituted modernity in Europe: the Renaissance. A country that remained spiritually romantic, and which in architecture did not feel the spatiality and structuralism, except isolated examples, of the Gothic, and which, in painting, during this period received so much influence from the Netherlands, came to be the scene of the transformations of a late Gothic, sui-genis, the Manueline, in a poorly assimilated Renaissance, lacking spatial understanding. In fact, it was the international current of Mannerism that took shape and best identified with the Portuguese taste.
