O século XIX está povoado de preconceitos e mitos. Superioridade racial, climas bons e climas ruins, situação geográfica, predestinação, etc. prestavam-se a deformações que, embora evidentes, interessavam aos que pretendiam divulgar uma ideologia que se convencionou chamar de colonialista. Atendia, tal ideologia, à classe dominante na Europa, consequentemente também à classe dominante no Brasil; esta, procuradora daquela, aceitava-lhe subalternamente os padrões.
The nineteenth century is populated with preconception and myths. Racial superiority, good and bad climates, geographical situation, predestination, etc. they lent themselves to deformations that, while evident, interested those who wished to spread an ideology that was conventionally called colonialist. Such ideology served the ruling class in Europe, and consequently also, the ruling class in Brazil; this one, the prosecutor of that, subalternly accepted his standards.
