The Federal University of Pernambuco lost a good professor; Brazilian letters, a poet; the history of Portuguese literature, one of its most dedicated researchers; and we all lost a friend. It is difficult to write in recomposing what was planned as a review of Joel's so-called free-teaching thesis, a review that we had announced, and which he festively hoped for. Friends do not die, as Hermilo Borba Filho repeatedly said. They got enchanted. This article is not, and could not be, a funeral prayer. It is just an intellectual duty.
