“Viva el Rey”: acclamation and celebration for D. José I in Pernambuco

This article analyzes some parties held for King D. José I in Pernambuco, more precisely in Recife and Olinda, on the occasion of his acclamation and celebration for his life and health due to the events of the earthquake and attack. From the practice of celebrating the king without his actual presence, we see these demonstrations as a way of bringing the sovereign to the locality with the help of their representatives formed by members of the local elites, who organized and participated in these celebrations. We look upon these feasts as an efficient resource for the king's exaltation and affirmation of royal power, as well as a form of demonstration of loyalty and fidelity to the monarch by his distant vassals.
