PRÁTICAS E REPRESENTAÇÕES EM CHOQUE: O LUGAR SOCIAL DOS MARACATUS NA CIDADE DO RECIFE, NOS ANOS DE 1890 A 1930.
Abstract
Nos primeiros anos do século XX, um renomado folclorista, Pereira da Costa, ao discorrer sobre os maracatus, prognosticou o provável fim dos mesmos, sobretudo devido às mudanças ocorridas na sociedade com o fim da escravidão e o desaparecimento dos últimos africanos. O maracatu é considerado uma reminiscência de antigas práticas diretamente ligadas ao passado escravista e, portanto, fadado ao desaparecimento. Entretanto, compulsando as listas de licenças fornecidas pela polícia para que as agremiações carnavalescas tivessem a permissão de desfilar, percebemos a existência de uma quantidade significativa de maracatus, demonstrando que a prática social era dotada de uma dinâmica oposta às representações construídas sobre a cultura afro-descendente, notadamente os maracatus. O objetivo deste trabalho é discutir o modo como essas representações criam um lugar social para a cultura afro-descendente, em especial os maracatus, e sua relação com as práticas sociais.Downloads
