O POVO, A GUERRA, A LIBERDADE: UM PROGRAMA POLÍTICO POPULAR DURANTE A GUERRA DE INDEPENDÊNCIA NA BAHIA (1822-1823).

Abstract

O processo de Independência do Brasil teve na Bahia um capítulo a parte. Tropas portuguesas ocuparam a capital — Salvador — e ali permaneceram até 2 de Julho de 1823, quando retiraram-se depois de uma longa e imóvel guerra, para que o Exército Pacificador — formado por voluntários baianos e tropas imperiais e liderado pelas elites baianas — pudesse libertar a cidade e finalmente a província se juntasse ao Império Brasileiro sob o governo de D. Pedro I. Dentro da guerra, porém, autoridades e proprietários tiveram uma preocupação, muitas vezes maior do que com os portugueses, com as classes populares e sua movimentação política, sendo donos de um potencial rebelde pautado por uma experiência política constituída ao longo de décadas. Este artigo busca identificar as formas de participação popular durante a guerra e sua relação com um possível programa popular inaugurado em 1798 na Revolta dos Búzios.
