Nos últimos vinte anos um crescente número de estudiosos brasileiros e estrangeiros, tem sido atraido pelo tema da escravidão negra no Brasil. Alguns, interessados na evolução da sociedade multiracial brasileira, buscam no regime escravocrata as raízes do presente padrão de relações raciais vigente no pais. Mas, infelizmente, enquanto o escravo se tornou um objeto de estudo por parte de historiadores e sociólogos, o homem livre de cor tem sido praticamente Ignorado.
In the last twenty years a growing number of Brazilian and foreign scholars have been attracted by the theme of black slavery in Brazil. Some, interested in the evolution of the Brazilian multiracial society, seek in the slave regime the roots of the current pattern of racial relations prevailing in the country. But, unfortunately, while the slave has become an object of study on the part of historians and sociologists, the free man of color has been practically Ignored.
