Archaeological research in Brazil was born in the shadow of foreign travelers, naturalists, botanists, geologists and paleontologists, sent by their countries to enrich collections of European museums, as well as anthropologists, scholars of still-living wild societies. For this reason, among nineteenth-century scientists, archaeologists and naturalists are bruised and complemented. Lund was mostly paleontologist, concerned with fossils of extinct fauna. His study of the man in Lagoa Santa was casual, as finding human fossils could not fail to interest a scientist of his magnitude. Emilio Goeldi, the museum organizer who bears his name today, had been eminently botanical, but his global view of the science of his time and the thematic richness offered by the Amazon led him to create sections of zoology and anthropology that would gradually increase the museum's collection. Our Ladislau Netto began his scientific life as a botanist, specializing in his doctorate in Paris.
