The press in jail
the prison trajectory and political struggle of Cipriano Barata during the First Reign (1823-1831)

The scenario of press freedom in Brazil of the first half of the nineteenth century is permeated by a constant shock between the state centralizing forces and the activity of Liberal Press writers, as in the case of Cipriano José Barata de Almeida (1762-1838), who would reach great notoriety when opposing the government group of D. Pedro I, which causes in his arrest. During this article, we propose to accompany its trajectory in the jails until the 1830s, where we use a broad personal documentation of cockroach, between manuscripts, petitions, requirements and correspondences, which circulated in the court's press between 1823 and 1831, and contextualize the disputes of the northern and Fluminense political elites, the different liberalisms (moderate and exalted) and, finally, their) A arduous legal struggle, for life and freedom, which yields fruits only during the crisis of the first reign
