OS JESUÍTAS E O “AUMENTO E CONSERVAÇÃO” DO ESTADO DO MARANHÃO E PARÁ (SÉCULO XVII)
Abstract
Este texto analisa as percepções dos jesuítas em torno aos problemas do uso da força de trabalho indígena na Amazônia, principalmente ao longo da segunda metade do século XVII, entendendo as como um dos vários aspectos de uma reflexão mais geral sobre o desenvolvimento econômico do Estado do Maranhão e Pará. Nesse sentido, juntamente com os moradores, as autoridades locais e reais, os conselhos do reino e o próprio rei, os jesuítas participaram de um amplo debate sobre as formas de incrementar as atividades produtivas e o comércio da região. Assim, ao discutir as missões e o seu papel como missionários, os jesuítas, para além da evangelização, procuraram examinar e dar respostas aos problemas que a própria ocupação e conquista do Maranhão haviam gerado.
