REFORMA CEMITERIAL OITOCENTISTA E O CASO DO CAÇOTE: UMA NECRÓPOLE QUE O RECIFE NÃO QUIS.
Abstract
Este artigo tem por objetivo contribuir para o debate historiográfico sobre o processo de implementação de cemitérios no Brasil, mediante o contexto das reformas sanitárias ocorridas a partir do século XIX. Tem-se corno foco de estudo um projeto de construção de um cemitério na Freguesia dos Afogados em 1878, cujo empreendimento foi estimulado pelo problema se superlotação na principal necrópole da cidade — Cemitério Público do Bom Jesus da Redenção, inaugurado em 1851. O aumento na demanda por enterros teve como causa principal o crescente número de vítimas da seca que migraram para o Recife em busca de socorros públicos. A implantação deste novo cemitério acabou por reacender velhos atritos entre as orientações higienistas e os costumes fúnebres locais. A hipótese central é a de que, no entendimento da população recifense, a reforma cemiteral não se restringia ao ato da construção de cemitérios. Um espaço para sepultamentos somente seria aceito se fosse possível harmonizar determinações político-sanitárias com a ostentação da pompa fúnebre. As fontes utilizadas para a elaboração do presente trabalho fazem parte do conjunto documental da Câmara do Recife, Anais da Assembléia Legislativa Provincial de Pernambuco e Relatórios de Saúde Pública.Downloads
