UMA ESTRANHA NOÇÃO DE CIÊNCIA: REPERCUSSÕES DO PENSAMENTO EUGENICO NO BRASIL
Abstract
Este artigo se propõe a realizar um estudo sobre o processo de consolidação das doutrinas raciais européias no século XIX e, particularmente, da assimilação do pensamento eugênico no Brasil, no século XX. Baseado nas idéias de Francis Galton, o médico psiquiatra Renato Khel fundou a Sociedade Eugênica de São Paulo, no ano de 1918, usando argumentos que serviram de base para explicar biologicamente a situação de atraso em que se encontrava a população brasileira e propondo, juntamente com outros teóricos, a busca de uma possível harmonização de um tipo nacional, tendo em vista acelerar o “branqueamento” da sociedade.
