Study of the causes of the Pernambuco shipwrecks belonging to the Pernambuco Coastal Steam Shipping Company (1854-1908)

The present work is a study about cause factors of wrecks of some ships belonging to Companhia Pernambucana de Navegação Costeira por Vapor, that aiming to understand for what reasons such accidents occurred, considering that steam navigation in the 19th century, configured itself as a great, efficient and agile invention. Its main purpose is to quantify, identify and locate the shipwrecks, as well evaluate, critically, the cause factors of the Company’s shipwrecks that occurred off the coast of Pernambuco. The work’s methodology was basically the realization of an extensive historical and archeological research about the shipwreck’s sites. This research aimed to understand the reasons why few shipping companies acted in Brazil during the 19th century, as well contributes to future researches on causative factors of steamship wrecks and their criteria of abandonment.
