Within the current medieval historiography, the discussion about the concept of feudalism has raised immense debates and controversies that have not yet led to a consensus among researchers of the subject. The word "feudo" over the centuries has had many meanings and has been used in different ways by countless authors. Its earliest form appears to be found in some late ninth-century burgundian documents, under the spelling of feos or feus, expressing the meaning of a movable property, probably cattle.
