Understandings about the process of socio-spatial segregation in the urban space of Caicó/RN: an analysis of the West Zone

Abstract

The expressive growth of the Brazilian urban population leads to the emergence of problems in cities, making access to housing, health and safety difficult. In this sense, Caicó is characterized as an important regional urban reference in Rio Grande do Norte. However, in the unequal capitalist system in which we live, there are processes, such as real estate speculation, where the low-income population ends up being segregated to the outskirts of the city, constituting a process of socio-spatial segregation. Thus, the present research sought to understand this process in the urban space of Caico, especially in the West Zone, from bibliographic surveys related to theoretical understanding, quantitative and qualitative research, photographic records of spatial forms in the aforementioned area, application of questionnaires, dialogues with the residents and discussion of the main problems and needs faced in these portions of the urban space of Caico, deepening the understanding of the performance of the public power in the community, to constitute a broad understanding of the reality experienced by the residents of the West Zone of Caico. In this way, the present research contributed to highlight how the segregation processes are reflected in the existing social dynamics, emphasizing the relevance of a geographic theoretical reflection for the effective understanding of the space of Caicó.
