The article is the result of research conducted during a specialization course and aimed to understand the use of textual genres for developing reading skills in Early Childhood Education. With a theme related to literacy, this study emerged from a reflection on the relationship between working with textual genres and the development of reading skills in early education. The methodology adopted was qualitative in nature, using a bibliographic method. As for the results, the starting point was the notion that textual genres are historical tools of communication, as well the cultures artifacts. Learning written language through genres is recommended not only by literacy scholars but also in regulatory documents. It is concluded that genres significantly and contextually enhance children's communicative abilities, moving away from traditional learning perspectives.
