Educación sentimental y afectos em la política: Mill, Kant, Spinoza y Lordon

Abstract

Guided by three classical thinkers, Mill, Kant and Spinoza, and a current one, Lordon, the article talks about the importance of affections in politics and the necessary sentimental (self)education to take part in the policy of affections that happens in the public sphere. This is not only the space for exchanging information and opinions,but also, and especially, it is a public space where ideas endowed with emotional expression prevail. Politics is an ars affectandi, as Lordon suggests. The human condition, characterized by the intertwining of ideas and affections, invites us to express political ideas with emotional intensity. Perhaps citizens, as Mill did, should do an emotional learning for political participation. But this cannot mean turning politics into mere marketing, as giving up critical analysis of ideas never can be justified.
