This article deals with reading in textbooks in the early grades of elementary school. The object of analysis is a corpus taken from a textbook. The overall objective is to understand the content present in the texts read in the classroom. The methodology is qualitative, bibliographic in nature, and theoretically we engage in dialogue with Bittencourt (1996) and Reis and Magalhães (2013), among others. The analyses show that the texts present content that is distant from the reality of students in the interior of the Amazon region of Pará; reading is aimed at solving activities and the focus is on memorizing grammatical rules, distancing students from the critical formation of their reality and the possibility of becoming readers.
