Abstract

The metaphor of "laboratories" to do and learn mathematics appeared in history, when emerges the necessity of renewing and developing mathematics teaching. The conference will show the evolution of this metaphor, since the creation of ICME (1908). The mathematical laboratories are always presented in relation to the instrumentsthey contain, so the evolution of the metaphor accompanies  the  evolution  of  these  instruments.  We  show  in  this  paper  how the  evolution  of technological  environments  makes  it  possible  to conceive,  in  the  space  of  the  ‘ordinary' mathematics  class,  moments  of  life  of  a  laboratory  of  mathematics,  and  then  to  prolong,  at  a distance, these laboratories. It is also shown that the development of mathematics laboratories for students implies the development of mathematical laboratories for teachers. This viewpoint will be  supported  by  the  French  experience  of  a  teacher  association  developing  online  resources, Sésamath.  We  deduce  the  need  for  new  theoretical  approaches  articulating  resource  design, evolution of practices, and professional development, combining individual and collective aspects of teachers work.
