Abstract

The opening of new road cuts in the region of the northern edge of the Araripe Ba sin allowed for the exposure of un its not previously mapped in the region, such as conglomerates and boulders. Siliciclastic facies occur in all tectonosedimentary sequences, and conglomeratic facies, due to the high flow ene rgy the y demand, occu r in on ly a fe w lithostratigraphic un its. Thus , we sought to interpret the associated deposit system(s), as well as to understand the stratigraphic positioning of these sections through the description, analysis and stud y of the succession of 6 sedimentary facies, the qualification and macroscopic quantification of 200 clasts of the conglomeratic facie s framework and analysis of paleocurrents in 63 sedimentary structures and 7 imbricated clasts. Thus , the deposits were classified as a longitudinal section of terrigenous allu vial fan systems, presenting their terminal portions (lam itic and sandstone facies), as well as part of the apical portions (conglomeratic fa cies filling channels). The change in the water flow regime implies clima tic variations, where the climate changed from humid to semi-arid, or tectonics, where the re was an increase in the local slope, or an association of both. Thus, it was concluded that the deposits may be associated with the tectonic events of the post-rift phase of the basin, which occurred contemporaneously with the deposition of intertwined alluvial systems of the Barbalha Formation
