Estudos Universitários: revista de cultura, 1962-2022.Digital preservation of 60 years of Brazilian intellectual heritage

Abstract

The present article aims to record the process of digitization of the issues published in printed format by Estudos Universitários: revista de cultura (EUs), of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), from 1962 to 2019. The activities were carried out in the first semester of 2022, in the premises of the Denis Bernardes Memorial (Main Library) and the Library of the Recife Law School (FDR), both integrants of UFPE’s library system. In this paper, we present the steps we went through to digitize the volumes, highlighting the tools, applications, and software used throughout the activity. We also comment on the journal’s trajectory, through a panoramic analysis of its volumes, thus revealing editorial phases - with different tendencies and concerns in the face of distinct historical-political contexts. It can be said that a major rupture occur-red in 1964, shortly after the birth of the journal, with the civil-military dictatorship and the consequent exile of members of the founding editorial board. Much of what was experienced by EUs throughout the second half of the twentieth century until the present moment leads us to address its importance as a material cultural heritage, and therefore makes strategies such as the ones described here essential to ensure the preservation of the collection.
