In May 2022, a cyclone that occurred in the southwestern South Atlantic Ocean acquired subtropical characteristics and was named Yakecan by the Brazilian Navy. Since the frequency of subtropical cyclones is small in the South Atlantic, their occurrence demands studies to investigate the physical processes associated with their genesis. Therefore, this study describes the environment that favored the development of Yakecan using ERA5 reanalysis. Through analyses of mean sea level pressure (MSLP) fields and wind at 850 hPa, it was observed that at 1200 Z on May 16, 2022, the merging of two cyclones in the South Atlantic gave rise to a new system, which became the precursor to Yakecan. At that time, the cyclone had not yet acquired subtropical characteristics as the thermal asymmetry parameter did not meet the threshold established for subtropical system classification. However, from 1800 Z on May 16 to 1800 Z on May 19, the system exhibited subtropical characteristics. The environment in which the two cyclones merged was characterized by weak baroclinicity, resulting in weak vertical wind shear (200–850 hPa). This condition favored the organization of convection and the development of the subtropical system.
