Abstract

Hydrological modeling is an important support tool for decisions involving the management of water resources and the maintenance of drinking water. Given this, this study develops a systematic review (PRISMA 2020 methodology) highlighting the use of hydrological models and their efficiency in evaluating hydrological characteristics. Through the selection of articles hosted on the digital journal platforms Scopus and Web of Science (WoS), published since 1995, it was possible to evaluate: the practical applications of various hydrological models, the conclusions of the studies, and the efficiency and limitations for arid, semi-arid, humid and semi-humid river basins, located in different regions of the world. 28 publications were evaluated, most of which addressed river basins located in China. However, the vast majority of hydrological models require an extensive amount of data for their deficiency and validation, which limits some studies due to the lack of reliable data to support the interpretation of events and prediction of future occurrences. The models that were most applied in research throughout the review were: HEC-HMS, TOPMODEL and, mainly, Xinanjiang. Furthermore, CAWM IV stands out for being a model that addresses unique modeling with a reduced amount of input data, compared to other models, demonstrating efficiency in modeling river basins located in dry regions, and with application potential in humid areas, enabling broad applications in the interpretation of hydrological issues and in the management of water resources.
