The purpose of this article is to deal with the (re) affirmation of devotion to Catholic saints in 16th century Portuguese America, especially the spreading of devotion to Saint Ursula and to the Eleven Thousand Virgins, driven mainly by the presence of the Society of Jesus in this locality. These missionaries were responsible for disseminating various religious practices - such as feasts dedicated to Catholic saints and the transfer of sacred relics - as well as for encouraging the founding and maintenance of "places of devotion", such as confraternities and / or brotherhoods , in the fourth part of the world. We will deal specifically with this last aspect, from the study of the founding of the Confraternity of the Eleven Thousand Virgins in the colony.
