DE HERMANDADES Y PROCESIONES. LA COFRADÍA DE ESCLAVOS Y LIBERTOS NEGROS DE SANT JAUME DE BARCELONA Y LA ASIMILACIÓN DE LA NEGRITUD EN LA EUROPA PREMODERNA (SIGLOS XV-XVI)
Abstract
Resumen: A partir del análisis de las ordenanzas fundacionales de la hermandad de negros de Sant Jaume de Barcelona, este trabajo pretende, en primer lugar, dar a conocer la temprana fundación de esta cofradía ibérica para, después, contextualizar la génesis y el desarrollo de la asociación con las de otras hermandades negras surgidas en las penínsulas ibérica e itálica como consecuencia de la primera trata atlántica. Por último, trata de mostrar cómo la sociedad cristiana propició mediante la cofradía y los rituales públicos, especialmente las procesiones cívicas y religiosas, la asimilación de las comunidades africanas en los esquemas y jerarquías sociales del Occidente cristiano durante los últimos años de la Edad Media y las primeras décadas de la Era Moderna.

Abstract: Through the analysis of Saint James’ black brotherhood of Barcelona, this paper attempts to explain the early foundation of this Iberian confraternity in order to then situate the genesis and the development of the association within the context of other black brotherhoods that arose in the Iberian and Italic peninsulas as a result of the first Atlantic Trade. Finally, it will show how the Christian society facilitated through the confraternity and the public rituals, especially the civic and religious processions, the assimilation of the African communities into the social schemes and hierarchies of West Christianity during the last years of the Middle Ages and the first decades of the Modern Era.
