This article seeks to understand how Pombaline anti-Jesuit politics constructed discourses contrary to the Society of Jesus, but the focus of attention falls on those produced in Portuguese America. The sources are varied and were produced by Jesuits, by Popes Benedict XIV and Clement XIII, by the bishop of Rio de Janeiro, D. Antonio do Desterro, by the governor of the captaincy, Gomes Freire de Andrade, by the viceroys who succeeded him and by the King D. José I and his assistants, mainly Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo. The notion of the Portuguese empire and the relationships established with other monarchies and the Vatican are present throughout the research, demonstrating the networks of circulation of information, people and decisions that affected the daily lives of many who lived in different regions of this empire.
