Durante a ocupação neerlandesa do Nordeste da America Portuguesa, o meio circulante era escasso. Nesse artigo, procura-se analisar as causas da falta de “dinheiro de contado” ou numerário na América Portuguesa durante a ocupação neerlandesa (1630 – 1654) e o uso do açúcar como meio de pagamento, uma das consequências dessa escassez.
