Maternal perception of airway obstruction by foreign bodies in children

Objective: To investigate the perception of mothers about the prevention, identification and management of airway obstruction by foreign bodies in children. Method: descriptive, exploratory and qualitative research, carried out with 11 mothers assisted in a family health unit in the municipality of Campina Grande, Paraíba. Data were collected through interviews supported by a semi-structured instrument. The discourses were transcribed and the data processed with the aid of the IRaMuTeQ software and, subsequently, submitted to content analysis. Results: After analyzing the discourses, three categories emerged: Prevention in each gesture: the vigilant care of mothers against child choking; Between knowledge and instinct: the mother's perception in the face of infantile choking; and Knowledge and insecurity: the maternal dilemma in the management of child choking. Conclusion: It was evidenced that mothers assume a preventive posture of continuous monitoring in relation to the food offered and small objects, recognizing some clinical manifestations presented in cases of choking. Although they report having information about first aid conducts, they still show fear and insecurity to perform the techniques.
