Overview of scientific literature on rural youth in Brazil: A systematic review

Abstract

Brazil has a large contingent of young people living in the countryside, a public that needs the attention of the public authorities and scientific literature. This article aims at a systematic review of current academic production regarding rural youth, looking for possible gaps and demands for new research agendas. For this, a literature review was carried out between the years 2009 and 2019 in articles published in the journals in the databases of SciELO, Portal de Periódicos Capes and Google Scholar. 110 publications were found and 60 of them were analyzed, after adopting the exclusion criteria for repeated articles or out of scope. These were compiled by year of publication, journal, authorship, region, thematic section, method and nature of the research. The articles are mostly field studies and with a qualitative approach method, focusing mainly on the South and Southeast. The main themes discussed in the articles are permanence and/or exodus in the rural world, education in the countryside, rural extension, public policy for the rural world and identity. It concludes by suggesting the need for further research in the area, in other Brazilian regions and with an expansion of the topics discussed.
