Abílio Cézar Borges and brazilian education at the Buenos Aires international pedagogical congress (1882)

This article aims to investigate the performance of Brazilian intellectual Abílio Cézar Borges (1824-1891) in the International Pedagogical Congress held in Buenos Aires in 1882, as a representative of the Brazilian Empire. Abílio Borges was born in Bahia, studied at the Faculty of Medicine. He served as director of public instruction and he founded schools in Bahia, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. He published several works for students and teachers, and received the title of “Barão de Macahubas”in 1881. In order to carry out the study, we sought to answer the following questions: who was this nineteenth-century educational intellectual? What was the course of your education and professional performance that ave himthe necessary credentials to represent Brazil at the International Pedagogical Congress? and what were your pedagogical ideas? Based on Carlo Ginzburg's evidential method, we resorted mainly to hemerographic sources collected in Brazilian and Argentinean digital repositories. We are based, above all, on the contributions of Michel de Certeau and Jean François Sirinelli that help us to understand the path of the intellectual. The “Barão deMacahubas”stands out in the educational sceneryof the period as a school director, educator, author of books, concerned with circulating his ideas about national education.
