Abstract

This paper illuminates the pedagogy of the communist enemy as promoted by a significant Brazilian reactionary—eugenicist, psychiatrist, professor, and businessman Antonio Carlos Pacheco e Silva—during the 1974 II Conference of the Latin-American Anticommunist Confederation (CAL) in Brazil. It examines his involvement in the 1964 coup d'état against João Goulart, facilitated through the Institute of Social Studies and Research (IPÊS). The paper underscores the Brazilian far-right's affiliation with the CAL and Pacheco e Silva's influential role within it. It further explores the political-pedagogical vision articulated by the Commission Against Subversion in Schools and Universities, presented at the 1974 CAL Congress. This study contributes to the historiographical critique of Cold War anticommunist internationalism by highlighting Brazil's role in the global far-right movement's internationalization through Pacheco e Silva and the CAL. The analysis is based on a thorough review of specialized literature and sources from the National Information Service of the Brazilian military dictatorship.

Doutor em História pela PUC-SP, com estágio de doutorado sanduíche na Columbia University nos EUA (Fulbright-Brasil). Foi pesquisador da Comissão Nacional da Verdade e do Projeto “Responsabilidade de Empresas por Violações de Direitos durante a Ditadura Militar”, do Centro de Antropologia e Arqueologia Forense da Universidade Federal do Estado de São Paulo. Pesquisador do Núcleo de Estudos de História: Trabalho, Ideologia e Poder e do Centro de Estudos de História da América Latina, ambos na PUC-SP, e da “Red Internacional de Estudios sobre el Estado de Excepción y el Terrorismo de Estado” (Redet), da Universidade de Oviedo, Espanha, e da rede “The Rise of the Right Against Rights: Global (Dis)Order in Latin America and Beyond”, da Universidade de Oxford, Reino Unido.
