Abstract

This study investigates the practices of benzedeiras in the Campo Novo neighborhood of Quixadá, Ceará. The objective is to analyze how these practices and ways of being of benzedeiras, mediated by oral tradition, contribute to cultural and environmental preservation. The research highlights the transmission of traditional knowledge, such as the use of medicinal plants and healing rituals, emphasizing the importance of these practices for community identity and sustainability. Using a qualitative approach and oral history methodology, interviews were conducted with three healers. The results indicate that valuing these practices not only promotes cultural subsistence but also contributes to environmental education in the community. The study concludes that traditional healers play a crucial role in promoting health and well-being, reinforcing the complementarity between traditional knowledge and modern medicine and the need to integrate diverse knowledge in the pursuit of a sustainable future.
