: Literary excerpts in French as a Foreign Language classes can be analysed using a typology based on formal aspects (cutting, formatting, relationship to the work, scale relationships) and functional aspects (uses of the excerpt). This approach allows for the distinction of several forms of extraction: chosen piece, fragments, authentic documents, instrumentalised excerpts, quotations, or adaptations. The excerpt thus appears as a tool for focusing and condensing, supporting an intensive reading regime that complements long reading. Implementing varying text scales enhances the potential of literary excerpts in the language classroom.
