Notes on Conceptions of Education in Marx and Gramsci

ABSTRACT
This paper, employing a literature review, elucidates key aspects of the educational thought of Marx and Gramsci, demonstrating that although Marx did not dedicate a separate work exclusively to education, this theme is intricately linked within the Marxist framework to other central categories such as the division of labor and history. It also recognizes that the educational ideas of Marx simultaneously point towards the critique and transformation of educational institutions of his time, with two distinct perspectives: short and medium-term (specific proposals aligned with concrete historical events) and long-term (the educational process related to the principles of communism). Furthermore, it highlights the fact that in Gramsci, education holds a central position, as I- Gramsci's writings have an educational character; II- in education, theory and practice, culture and politics are organically intertwined; III- schooling is a process of mass formation. In this regard, the paper presents Gramsci's idea of a unified, basic, common school, firmly grounded in the notion of labor as an educational principle.
