Abstract

In this paper, we analyze howstudents participate in a mathematics class by using manipulatives. A ninth grade class that used manipulativesin its mathematics classes at a public school in the city of Salvador was observed and analyzed. Following Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger, we use some theoretical notions about situated learning to  analyze  the collected  data. We  conclude  that  students  may  participate  in  a  mathematics lesson  withmanipulatives by recognizingmathematical  objectsand  their  elementsat  manipulatives, and by justifyingmathematical algorithms with manipulatives.
