O presente trabalho realizou um estudo sobre a problemática socioambiental urbana na nascente Pau Amarelo no município de Garanhuns-PE. Teve como objetivo analisar os fatores que impactam socioambientalmente na mesma. A metodologia do estudo baseou-se em uma pesquisa exploratória com ênfase na observação e na aplicação de entrevistas junto a moradores das localidades próximas às nascentes, além de uma pesquisa bibliográfica referente a documentos pertinentes ao estudo. Foram pesquisados documentos que continham dados históricos sobre a cidade e realizadas entrevistas e conversas informais para levantamento de dados, bem como coleta de água para análise de características físico-químicas. A partir do presente estudo foi possível verificar que ao longo dos últimos quarenta anos, Garanhuns vem experimentando uma expressiva expansão urbana em direção a zonas geomorfologicamente desfavoráveis, resultando em moradias precárias em encostas e em poluição da nascente Pau Amarelo. Abstract The present work conducted a study on the problematic urban environmental in the Pau Amarelo source in the municipality of Garanhuns-PE. Aimed to analyze the factors that impact socioenvironmentally in same. The study methodology was based on an exploratory research with emphasis on observation and on implementation of interviews with the inhabitants nearby the sources, in addition to a review of the literature the documents pertinent to the study. Were researched documents that contain historical data about the city, also interviews and informal conversations to survey data, as well as collection of water for analysis of physico-chemical characteristics. From this study it was possible to verify that over the last forty years, Garanhuns is experiencing a significant urban expansion toward the areas unfavourable geomorphologically, resulting in precarious houses on hillsides and in pollution in Pau Amarelo source.
