The aim of this study is to analyze the variability and trend of rainfall, as well as identify drought events in the Western Cariri region of Paraíba. For this, the Mann Kendall test was applied to the annual rainfall totals and the RUN method to the monthly rainfall totals of six stations, within the region, in the period from 1963 to 2021. The data were obtained from the National Water Agency and Executive Water Management Agency of the State of Paraíba. Analysis of monthly averages revealed that the rainiest semester occurred from January to June, with the months of February to May presenting the highest rainfall averages. In contrast, the dry period covers the months of August to November, with the lowest averages rainfall. Among the rainfall stations, Prata recorded the highest annual rainfall totals and Congo the lowest. In the Mann Kendall test, only Camalaú and São Sebastião de Umbuzeiro (SSU) showed significant decreasing trends, while the other stations did not show statistically significant changes. The RUN method revealed that São José dos Cordeiros and Camalaú had the highest maximum and average severity values, with Camalaú being the station with the highest average drought intensity. The longest drought durations were observed in the North and East of Western Cariri, with Camalaú and São José dos Cordeiros exhibiting the highest maximum duration values.
