The United States and Brazilian higher education during the military dictatorship

This paper aims to analyze the role played by the United States, especially by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in reconfiguring the Brazilian higher education system during the military dictatorship, specifically between the years 1964 and 1968. Even though the first agreements and programs signed between Brazilian and American universities took place in the mid-1940s, it is mainly from the founding of the Alliance for Progress, in 1961, that the United States systematically organized, using a notable amount of resources and technical advisors involved, its intervention in Brazilian higher education policy, one of the strategic sectors to maintain its hegemony over Latin American countries, especially Brazil.
