An ethnomathematical study of the principles of temporal measurement of Seventh-day Adventists

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the mathematical notions of temporal measurement principles used by Seventh-day Adventists to structure and support their doctrines and beliefs. To achieve this objective, the theoretical framework employed was based on the concepts brought by the Ethnomathematics Research Program. The research was qualitative and divided into several steps, including: the researcher establishing contact with representatives of the group studied to collect data, analyzing the materials provided, and examining the relationship between the data and Ethnomathematics. Among the conclusions, it was considered that this study has the potential to promote cultural self-awareness; it was regarded as fundamental for cultural preservation; it enables an understanding of how mathematical concepts are intertwined with the religious practices and beliefs of the group analyzed; it contributed to strengthening cultural connection and identity by exploring how mathematics may be intrinsically related to their traditions, rituals, and symbols; and it also fostered innovation and creativity by exploring new applications and interpretations of traditional mathematical concepts within the religious context, stimulating the mind to think originally and broadening the horizons of knowledge.
