This article discusses playfulness as an essential dimension of early childhood education, highlighting that its pedagogical role is still frequently underestimated when reduced to the notion of mere "play activities." The study examines the importance of playful practices in the school routine and seeks to challenge this reductionist perspective by emphasizing play as a fundamental pillar of childhood and learning. The research was conducted through a literature review and twenty observation sessions carried out in 2019 by two undergraduate students from the Pedagogy program at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), in a municipal school in the city. The observations involved two teachers and two preschool classes (Pre II), composed of four- and five-year-old children. The field observations revealed that playful activities, when planned with clear pedagogical intentionality, enhance learning, stimulate creativity, strengthen social bonds, and contribute to children's holistic development.
